River Restoration
in the Netherlands: addressing flood protection, mastering landscape and
improving environmental conditions in the areas surrounding the Dutch rivers - Dr. Migena
Zagonjolli, Deltares,
In
the Netherlands, the centuries old policy of raising dikes crest levels to
maintain the required level of flood protection is abandoned in favor of the
‘Room for the River’ policy. Widening river cross sections by relocating dikes
further away from the river channel, lowering of the floodplains, creating
bypasses, are few to mention measures proposed to create more room for the
river. The measures are designed to improve the environmental quality and the
landscape of the floodplains. The lecture will describe the process of
designing and implementing the measures and how experts from different fields
(hydraulic and geotechnical engineers, architects, etc. contribute to the
optimization of the measures.)
Dr. Migena Zagonjolli, is working as adviser and project coordinator in Deltares. She has working experience in the

is a leading, independent, Dutch-based research institute and specialist
consultancy for matters relating to water, soil and the subsurface. Deltares
applies advanced expertise to help people live safely and sustainably in delta
areas, coastal zones and river basins. It conducts research and provides
specialist advisory services for government authorities and the corporate
sector in The Netherlands and globally. It develops knowledge in partnerships
with universities, other knowledge institutions and the business sector, not
only in government research programmes but also in contract research.
